During the 1948 London Olympics, the aftermath of World War II in the city of London was startling. The skeletal remains of buildings destroyed by Hitler’s Luftwaffe, V1 flying bombs and V2 rockets were stark reminders of the 30,000 Londoners who perished in the attacks on the city.

The star of the 1948 London Olympics was Holland’s Francina "Fanny" Blankers-Koen, who not only became the first woman to win four gold medals in an Olympiad, but also equaled Jesse Owens’s record number of gold medals in track and field at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Fanny—known as the “Flying Housewife” by the time the games ended—was 30 years old and the mother of two.

Another aging athlete was a copper-chestnut horse named Red, who had escaped from a slaughterhouse in America and had survived years of pulling a junk wagon prior to his appearance in England. The efforts of Red and his equestrian partner in the three-day event, the most challenging of the three equestrian competitions at the 1948 summer games, are central to the historical fiction "Tangerine Horse of the London Olympics."

As with The Woman Who Loved Horses, the writing waffles between nonfiction sparsity and aloofness and fiction-style density and familiarity, but I still found the story engaging. The narrative of the Tangerine Horse of the London Olympics is still uneven; the POV does weird shifts in the beginning: It goes from a voice that is like "Granpa Otis" on a rocking chair to omniscient third person without explanation or coming back to the "Granpa Otis" voice, so you just aren't sure who the narrator is and why. It also shifts from impersonal, journalistic-like text (not just the historical explanatory segments) to moments of intimacy with the characters and story line. Nonetheless, the story is engrossing for which it is, imo, worth ignoring the weird narrative shifts.

Tangerine Horse of the London Olympics edition by Don Walters Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

So glad that Old Red's story continued on in this book. Very detailed on showing/eventing & the Olympics. Even if you aren't familiar with horse events its still such a great read. This book really involves you in every characters life and details the deep attachment humans have with horses and how much these animals give us in return.
It has been awhile since I read this book. I enjoyed the book, because horses just fascinate me. I enjoy just being with them. This was a good book to read, and just motivated me to visit a nearby ranch more often to be with horses. I learn so much just by observing horse behavior and interaction, that is helpful in dealing with humans.
Great sequel to Walters' first book," The Woman Who Loved Horses". In
"Tangerine", Red, the racehorse, injures himself in his winning
maiden race and he is retired and sent back to the stables to recover.
After several months of rest and boredom, he embarks on a new career
as a jumper (jumping saved his life in the first book). As a
successful jumper, this leads him to the Equestrian Events at the
1948 London Olympics against an intense field of competition. This
story showcases once again the versatility of the thoroughbred breed--
capable of various disciplines
I have a few more pages to go before I finish this story, but so far it is a terrific read. It is a very realistic look at the life of professional sport horses and those who care for and love them. I keep seeing my aunt as the main character, because she has so much in common with the thinking and acting of the main character. I hope Don Walters keeps writing horse stories!
This is a sequel to The Woman Who Loved Horses. The begining of Tangerine Horse is a very bare bones recap of the events of the first book so if you haven't already read it you may have difficulty reading far enough into Tangerine Horse to get involved in the plot. I feel that the author would have been better off just starting off with the current story and putting sequel to on the cover. But keep reading - the author delivers an enjoyable story.
The author wrote such a bare bones narrative that at first I was tempted to give up. It took several chapters before the story captured my full interest. By the end I could not put the book down. The description of the race was heartstopping.

Since I am old enough to remember the end of WW II there was much more that could have filled out the story for some background on those first Olympics following the war.

If not for the slow beginning this book would have earned five stars. If you persevere you will be rewarded with a great story.
I was very surprised at how much I liked this fictional book. Having recently seen Stephen Spielburg's War Horse movie, I thought this book about the first Olympic Games held after WWII ended was thoroughly researched and much more entertaining than War Horse. The editing was quite good, very few typos, and the author's notes at the end were really interesting.

Of course, it helps if you love horse stories, but even though I do, I learned a lot about three-day eventing that I did not know before. Really a fun read!
