A new mainstream novel of The Empire’s Corps!

Four years after their abandonment by the now-fallen Empire, the Commonwealth of Avalon is expanding into interstellar space and making contact with other successor states. With suspicion high on both sides, the Commonwealth and the enigmatic Wolfbane agree to hold a diplomatic meeting on Lakshmibai, a neutral world.

But Lakshmibai’s government hates off-worlders and, with the fall of the Empire, sees its chance to be rid of the hatred intruders once and for all. While Edward Stalker is besieged in their capital city, Jasmine Yamane must lead an untested army on a race against time to save the diplomats from annihilation.

And if she fails, the Battle of Lakshmibai may be the first shot in a new interstellar war.

To The Shores The Empire Corps Book 6 eBook Christopher Nuttall

Christopher Nuttall have a few themes that have a tendency to come back in his books. The decline of overconfident and oppressive governments as well as the decline of civilization itself certainly appears to be a favorite one. Various kinds of fanatics modelled after our own current and past history is another one. The latter one is of course a rather tempting as well as rewarding fountain of inspiration to use considering the amount of fanatics, religious or otherwise, that seems to run rampage and infest our planet these days.

This book takes the first theme, the decline of the human empire which is the foundation of the series itself, and throws in some religious nutcases based on the Indian caste system with a few dashes of one of our favorite historical villain, a certain Austrian corporal.

The result is a all-marine slug-it-out-in-the-dirt kind of story. Apart from the initial transport to this miserable planet that constitutes the location for this book there are no spaceships whatsoever. The highest off the ground we get are with a few choppers used for fire support. The story in this book can perhaps also be said to be somewhat narrower in scope than in many of Mr. Nuttall’s books. From starting out as a diplomatic mission it rather quickly turns into an issue of survival against a bunch of mad religious [censored] with an even madder religious [censored] as their leader.

As usual the writing is very good and you are sucked into the story without much difficulty. The level of lunacy on the side of the bad guys can sometimes be a wee bit frustrating but on the whole it is very enjoyable reading. I did find the ending to be a bit quick though. I would have liked a bit more agony as well as some dawning understanding that his world was indeed crashing down on him on the part of the prince. But that is a minor complaint.

Mr. Nuttall also managed to get in a last minute twist and tie-in to a previous book in the series in the last couple of paragraphs although I cannot say much about that one without it being a huge spoiler.

Overall yet another good book in the series.

To The Shores The Empire Corps Book 6 eBook Christopher Nuttall Reviews

I admire Nuttall. He writes fast and he writes a lot. And I read him a lot.
To the Shores is the 6th in his series about some Galactic marines who are in exile at the edge of explored space. The marine company is the military hub of a developing space of civilization in an fractured and burning Galactic Empire. Think of the problems that Alexander's governors had in maintaining Greek civilization in Bactria when the connection with Macedonia vanished. Good stuff.
The baby empire emerging from the blood and rubble of the crashed Empire is seeking like minded pals on the lightly populated frontier. The facilitate this friendship, a meeting on neutral ground is arranged. Sadly for the diplomats, the host nation takes an irrational and violent dislike to the off worlders. The space marines must battle their way through hordes of hostile natives to save the diplomats. Stuff like this happens from time to time. Think of the 55 days at Peiping. think of the rescue of Black Hawk Down.
By book six we are fairly well acquainted with Nuttall's characters. The marines are solid sorts, the kind of folk you would want around you in stressful times. We like them. And they are very accomplished killers.
I would begin at the beginning of the series and work up, if I were a new reader. These books do not cost much and do not take much time or effort to read. But they beat the dickens out of watching TV.
Initially I enjoyed series, books 1 and 2. Reminded me a lot of 'Lost Regiment' series and alternative history series of Gettysburg by William Forstchen. I really enjoyed both series -- a union civil war regiment transported to planet where they faced overwhelming odds but adapted and overcame.

The Empire Corps series goes the same way. Marine super unit-- mixture of seals, delta, special forces, marines and possibly Spartans -- gets stranded at edge of known galaxy of man. Corrupt, decadent empire falls and the vultures come out to build their own empires. Marines save the day over and over and over ..... And a new federation is built 'correctly'.

Lot of politics here and gets a little old. I'm on the same side as author but don't need political, historical preaching in every chapter. It embarrassed me since I share a lot of same politics but something about it that just got irritating.

Retired from marines after 34 yrs and gotta say that the unit sizes and other marine/military minutiae did not make sense, even allowing for sci fi. I read military and historical fiction besides serving in infantry and have no idea of the table of organization of those future marines of the empire corps. Squad, team, platoon were all thrown out and special weapons sections and I didn't have a clue how it all fit together. Maybe not important to most but important to me -- understanding composition of roman legion, phalanx , rifle company-battalion in napoleonic wars.

series turned into a formula where female(s) are MC and a lot of POV was from them with token likable, competent male gets introduced or further explored. And then male gets killed at end of book. BTW, I skipped two books getting here -- fall of empire and forgot the other. I don't believe they followed formula but rest did.

And last, because of the political undertone, I felt author went out of way to be politically correct. The Islamic good guys and the tough butt kicking female grunt. I'm not, nor ever been an 'IST' -- sexist, racist, etc -- but I'm not buying. Female grunts did not work for Israeli's, just one example, so what do American women have, do, ???? That we can integrate them into combat arms -- no problem. War is hell but combat is a MFer. People are dreaming us into a death spiral.

Everything just started getting old for me and couldn't take it anymore.
